The Low Vision Aid Service provided at our practice is designed for patients who suffer with vision loss that cannot be corrected with standard spectacle lenses.

Patients often require special magnifiers and other technological aids such as electronic magnification devices to further enhance their visual performance.

Common conditions causing vision loss:

  • Age-related Macula Degeneration (AMD)
  • Advanced Glacuoma
  • Retinitis Pigmentosa
  • Congential disorders causing macula dystrophy.

The most common of these is age-related macular degeneration. This is an age related condition causing damage to the macula which is responsible for your detailed central vision.

What to expect

The assessment takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour and a family member is advised to attend where possible for information such as how to change batteries on a device which can be difficult for patients with vision loss.

What happens next?

There are many devices available to help enhance your vision. They range from simple hand held magnifiers providing varying degrees of magnification to advanced technological devices which have other functions such as changing contrast and colours.

It is important to have your vision assessed as each person requires different degrees of magnification depending on your spectacle prescription, age, and level of vision you have remaining.

A good online source for information even for family and friends is the RNIB. This is the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
